LATE, THE FOLLOWING night, Jonathan awakened from a doze to find the vampire standing by his bed, watching him.

“Hi. I thought you’d come back. You didn’t wipe my memories last night.”

“I had to leave before the police arrived. The security guard was asking too many questions.” Maxim talked very low, careful not to draw the nurses or wake up the patient that shared the room.

“I didn’t tell them anything about you. I just told them exactly what happened up to the point when you showed up.”

“That is good.” Standing there not knowing what to do with his hands, nodding his head, Maxim gazed at the boy. “Are they treating you well?”

“Yeah, they gave me blood and took out the bullet. The doctor says I’ll have to stay a couple of days, make sure there’s no infection. A detective came and asked me questions, and a social worker is coming tomorrow. They all want to know about my home.”

“What will you do?”

“Delay them. They’re bound to find my mother and send me right back to her. If I explain the situation to the social worker, she might send me to a foster home, but that’s just as bad. I’m just a kid. No one gives a shit what I think.”

The boy looked away and closed his eyes. He looked fragile, a waif alone in an indifferent world. Maxim stood silent and patient until the boy looked at him again.

“You’re nothing like in the movies,” Jonathan whispered.

“What do you mean?”

“In the movies, the blood suckers are tall and sleek. They never have long, scruffy beards or tangled, wild hair. They have burning, red eyes that hypnotize you. They turn into ugly, deformed creatures as they rip out your throat and tear you apart. They don’t hold conversations or ask questions.”

“Oh, yes, the movies have it all wrong,” answered the vampire looking smug and superior. “They use no logic or common sense. They make up lies.”

“Can you let me keep my memories? I promise, I’ll say nothing about you to anyone. I like knowing about you. I like having at least one special thing in the world.” The boy looked at him beseechingly, and Maxim’s heart was moved.

“I will give you a little more time. I will consider our options and let you know.” Outside the room, quiet footsteps approached. The night nurse was coming to check on the boy. The vampire stepped into the shadows and disappeared.
